Richard Heart on scams, custodians and self-custody

Short answer

Heart’s recurring message is self-custody: if someone else holds your keys, you carry their risk. He challenged Craig Wright’s claim to be Satoshi on stage, says he warned people out of Celsius, and calls paid crypto marketing a “scam industrial complex”. Each point links to his own words with a timestamp; what could not be dated is marked.

What is his core message?

Self-custody. Crypto, as he puts it, was invented to remove middlemen and counterparty risk; if someone else holds your keys, take your coins back or expect to end up in the next headline about a failed platform (Kitco, 42:15). In the same interview he predicts more hacks and bankruptcies among custodial platforms.

He contrasts this with HEX: a staker earns yield while keeping their own keys, with no company in between holding the deposit (Kitco, 7:44).

Did he warn about Celsius before it failed?

Celsius froze customer withdrawals on 12 June 2022. What can be dated:

Date What Link
2022-06-13 X post: Celsius down 99 %, withdrawals frozen X
2022-06-13 Stream whose title ends “I warned you!”: he says he had been right about Celsius for almost two years, and that the risks of custodial yield had been explained on hex.com for years 8:29, 12:59
2022-07-29 Kitco interview: he says he had begged people to withdraw from Celsius for a long time 7:44

His website (2024) adds that he warned against Celsius, BlockFi and FTX for years before each of them failed. The earliest dated item found so far is from 13 June 2022, the day after the freeze. None of the 268 video titles checked on his channel from before June 2022 names Celsius, BlockFi or FTX — but the channel says YouTube has banned and reinstated it several times, so older videos may be missing. Earlier warnings may exist in posts that could not be searched — until one is found, the earlier warnings are his statement, not a verified record.

What is the “scam industrial complex”?

His name for the paid side of crypto marketing. His argument: ask who can afford to advertise to you. Mostly it is businesses that profit when users lose money — exchanges with heavy fees, margin-trading venues, influencers paid through referral links, and ranking sites that live on advertising (Kitco, 23:18).

How does he say to spot a scam?

He points to fake partnership news — the 2017 rumour that Amazon would accept Litecoin is his example — as a typical pump-and-dump tool. His advice is to prefer projects with a history and founders whose ethics you can judge for yourself (Zuby #170, 14:10).

What happened with “Faketoshi”?

Craig Wright has long claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. Heart’s channel published a recording titled “Craig Wright tells Richard Heart he is Satoshi” on 17 November 2019 (video), and in 2021 he described challenging “fake Satoshi” live on stage as part of his work against deception in crypto (Zuby #170, 21:22).

The question was settled in court later: on 20 May 2024 the High Court of England and Wales found that Wright is not the person who used the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto between 2008 and 2011 (COPA v Wright, para. 7.2).

Is there a defence fund I can donate to?

No official one is known. As of 17 October 2026 no official channel has announced a legal-defence fund for any of his cases, and fan sites that show donation addresses are not linked from any official account. Treat any “defence fund” wallet as a likely scam until an official channel announces it — and check that channel against the official links. More on common traps in Security.

What is not verified?

  • A named series often attributed to him, such as a “scam trust ladder”: no source found, so the name is not used here.
  • Dated warnings about Celsius, BlockFi or FTX from before their collapses: not found yet (see above).
  • Quotes on this page are paraphrased; timestamps come from the videos’ captions.
